What is an E-Bike?

An E-Bike (also known as an Electric Bike) is a bicycle that is motorised and has an electric motor that helps to propel users with their acceleration efforts.

E-Bikes are battery-powered and assist the rider with the movement of the bike pedals; you will also find that some E-Bikes come with a throttle for the cyclist to operate the acceleration manually.

Designed to make inclines easier and to help cyclists when their leg power is lacking, they can be useful for terrain that is rocky or for longer distances.

What are the benefits of an electric bike?

If you are considering whether or not to buy an E-Bike, you will undoubtedly want to know what the benefits are and how it can impact your cycling life. Some of the benefits of an electric bike include:

  • Reduced strain on the body during inclines.
  • Faster riding.
  • Help improve your fitness as you will be able to ride for longer.
  • Less sweat for commuters.
  • Cheaper and faster than other modes of transport.
  • Can keep up with your speedy friends on bike rides.

How fast are E-Bikes?

E-Bikes are not to be confused with mopeds or motorbikes – at their core, they are a bicycle. With that in mind, they are typically faster than regular bikes due to their electric motor.

Each e-bike will differ in terms of speed and capability depending on the construction and power of the motor. Maximum e-bike speeds are regulated by law, but typically in the UK, e-Bikes will assist up to 15.5mph.

Do you still have to pedal an electric bike?

Yes, you still have to pedal an electric bike. With an E-Bike, you have all the functionality of a regular pushbike with the added functionality of an electric motor that helps with pedalling. This can be activated by the cyclist whenever they please and is usually helpful for steep inclines or longer trails.

Sorry, you’re still going to have to pedal.

How long do electric bike batteries last?

If an electric bike is maintained well, you can expect the battery to last between 3 to 5 years. However, even if it is not put into use, a lithium battery will begin to lose its capacity over time.

Tips for prolonging your e-Bike battery life

  • Keep the battery cool – this means storing your bike and battery in a cool environment.
  • Make sure your battery is above freezing before charging in the winter months. You could potentially harm the cells in the battery if it isn’t left to warm up before charging.
  • Storing a battery that is fully charged can have an impact on the recoverable capacity. When storing a battery for an extended period of time, make sure that it is charged between 40-and 80%.

How far can an E-Bike go?

There are many variables when it comes to the distance that an E-Bike can travel. These include the size of the battery, the level of the motor assist you select, motor efficiency and the amount of weight that the bike is carrying. Other factors include the temperature, wind, the type of terrain you are biking on and even the wind.

These variables mean that an E-Bike’s range can be anything between 20-and 100 miles.

Can you use electric bikes in the rain?

Yes. Electric bikes are water-resistant and can withstand rain. As electric bikes are water-resistant and not waterproof, you should minimise the amount of exposure that the bike has to water. If it is submerged in water or has long-term exposure to water, your bike will become damaged.
